The Journey Begins

One day I woke up and realised I was only happy when outdoors. Not only was it my feeling, but also my husband and both small boys. It was something  none of us had vocalised but all profoundly felt.

On new year’s day 2019, I decided to set myself the challenge of completing 52 new adventures. Some of them would be huge challenges and some would be micro challenges. But I would seek out new places in the wild and new activities in which to enjoy them.

I was approaching 40 and suddenly realised that I had never gone on that gap year to Brazil. Nor did I take a teaching swap to live in New Zealand. Wrinkles, cellulite and grey hair were enveloping me and yet I felt as though I was still a child. What was going on? The thing about having two kids close together, is that when they reach a certain age, you feel as though you have just woken up from a coma. Where the hell had the last 10 years gone? And more importantly, what were we going to do with the next 10?

Last year had literally been the year from hell. My mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour. We had had building work going on at our home for 6 months, and our youngest child was going through diagnosis for Autism. It had left me physically and emotionally exhausted and finding something positive out of the mess left behind was challenging.

So this weird journey, which began as a game I played with myself, has led me to change my life in so many ways. I hope you enjoy reading about it!
